Bangkok MRT Station Flooded During Heavy Rain

Heavy rains in Bangkok on Friday evening, September 5, 2025, caused flooding at the Thailand Cultural Centre MRT station. Videos and photos shared on social media showed commuters wading through water on the concourse level of the Blue Line station.

The Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) issued a statement on Saturday, explaining the cause of the flooding. The authority stated that the issue was not due to a design flaw in the station itself but was a result of construction work for a connecting walkway between the station and the AIA building. An air vent on the tunnel roof, at street level, allowed floodwater from Ratchadaphisek Road to flow into the station during the downpour, which exceeded 100mm.

MRTA staff used sandbags to block the ventilation openings, and cleaning was completed. While services on the MRT Blue Line have resumed as normal, entrances/exits 2 and 3 at the Thailand Cultural Centre station remain temporarily closed. The MRTA has ordered the AIA building to halt construction and implement preventative measures to avoid similar incidents.

The heavy rain on Friday also caused flooding on several roads in the Huai Khwang, Rama 9, Phatthanakan, and Ramkhamhaeng areas of Bangkok. According to the Thai Meteorological Department, thunderstorms are expected to affect 70% of Bangkok and surrounding provinces on Saturday, with isolated heavy rain.
